Wakefield Veterans Relief Fund
Why Donate?More than 1800 veterans live in the town of Wakefield. A simple application of the Wakefield poverty rate implies that there are potentially 100 veterans living in a condition deemed unacceptable by local, state and federal law. While there is no exact statistic on local veteran poverty levels, we believe that one veteran living in poverty is too many.
While federal, state and local benefits exist to help veterans avoid poverty, rapid response is often need to prevent hunger and homelessness. Rapid relief is granted to Wakefield veterans in the form of supermarket food cards and all recipients are carefully vetted by the Wakefield VSO. |
MissionEstablished in 2014 by the Town of Wakefield, the Wakefield Veterans Relief Fund provides rapid support to low-income veterans. While federal and state benefit options are the city's first choice, local issues sometimes call for local solutions. The relief fund allows Wakefield Veteran Services staff the ability to solve local veteran issues like hunger, homelessness and heating/oil emergencies. The Fund was created by the support of Town Adminstrator Steve Maio, the Wakefield Veterans Advisory Board, the residents of Wakefield and the Wakefield Legislative Delegation.
