April 5th 2014 was National Gold Star Wives Day and I had the privilege this morning of honoring Helen Giorgio, Melrose Gold Star Wife at the Friday Veterans Breakfast at Memorial Hall.
Helen is a staunch advocate for veterans and the families, serving as the President on the Friday group for decades and fighting annually for recognition of Gold Star Wives at the local, state and federal level. Last Veterans Day, we had her as a guest speaker, representing all family members of veterans who sacrificed on behalf of the nation.
Gold Star Wives are federal recognized as the surviving spouses of soldiers killed in combat or soldier who pass away due to service connected disabilities. The symbol of the Gold Star Families is the gold star on a white field, similar to the common blue star on a white field denoting a family with the deployed service member.
