Today, Massachusetts law requires that all cities and towns continue the tradition of grave decorating by placing a U.S. flag above the grave of any veteran who served in the U.S. armed forces. In Melrose, Wakefield and Saugus, veteran groups, residents and civic organization gather annually to preserve this important tradition.
Times and dates for local grave decorating are as follows. We encourage all residents to take a moment or two in the coming week to thank our veterans for their service and sacrifice by participating in these events.
Where: Wyoming Cemetery (Sylvan Street)
When:Saturday, May 23 at 10 a.m.
What to Expect: Joint Veteran Services Officer Ryan McLane and the Melrose Veterans Advisory Board as they organize the decorating of the graves. The day starts with the National Anthem and instructions for young children on the display and meaning of veteran graves flags. The event ends with a special flag retirement ceremony will children are asked to participate in the proper disposal and handling of our nation's colors.
Where: Lakeside Cemetery (North Ave.) and Forest Glade Cemetery (Lowell Street)
When:Lakeside Cemetery is Monday, May 19th at 4 p.m.; Forest Glade is Friday, May 23 at 4 p.m.
What to Expect: Join officers of the American Legion and the Wakefield Veterans Advisory Board as they organize the decorating of the graves. Wakefield has two decoration days and annually, members of local civic organizations come out by the dozen to help honor our veterans. Please join us!
Where: Riverside Cemetery (Winter Street)
When:Friday, May 23rd at 3 p.m.
What to Expect: Join Saugus Flag and Graves Registration Officer Randy Briand and the Saugus Veterans Council as the organize the decoration of the graves. Randy provides pizza, water and soda for local residents as they honor their fallen veterans during this annual tradition.
