Wakefield Veteran Memorial Fund
More than 1800 veterans live in the town of Wakefield and its proud veteran history includes service in every one of our nation's military conflicts. Hundreds of monuments exist around the town with little or no long term protection for memorializing the service and sacrifice of our brave men and women. This fund allows the town to fund regular maintenance and keep all monuments and celebrations in the state of their original intention.
All expenditures from this fund will be vetted by the Wakefield Director of Veteran Services, the Wakefield Veterans Advisory Board and town officials. The fund will publish annual reports every fiscal year in order to maintain transparency and proper accounting.
Memorial Projects to Date
2015 - Women in Service Memorial
2017 - Restoration of WWI Monument
The WWI monument had been damaged by the elements and with the help and services of Wood lawn Memorials we were able to repair and roster the ORIGINAL plaque. The plaque was then remounted on a piece of stone from Barre, Vermont which is the same quarry as the WWII, Women in Service Memorial, and Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Monument.
Established in 2014 by the Town of Wakefield, the Wakefield Veteran Memorial and Patriotic Celebration Fund provides a permanent funding mechanism for veteran memorial restoration, memorial creation and celebrations to include Memorial Day and Veterans Day. The Fund was created by the support of Town Adminstrator Steve Maio, the Wakefield Veterans Advisory Board, the residents of Wakefield and the Wakefield Legislative Delegation.
