Assessment to Include Potential Restoration Costs
Although the monument still one of the more beautiful veteran monuments in the area, its state of disrepair is noticeable with some statues missing pieces and the base and obelisk showing signs of wear and cracking. The Wakefield Veterans Advisory Board first discussed the idea of restoring the monument in 2014; however, restoration companies needed for a project of this magnitude are rare.
VSO Alicia Reddin made this one of her first efforts upon her appointment in February, discussing the matter with the Wakefield Board of Selectmen before receiving a financial commitment from Town Administrator Steve Maio and the board for the initial cost of hiring the evaluators. The initial investment will be recovered by the town if it chooses to move forward and use Vermont Granite Works for the actual reconstruction.
We will continue to update this space and our social media platforms with details about this important project and the upcoming phases to include town report, potential restoration plans and associated fundraising.
