The Melrose Veterans Advisory Board continues to be instrumental in these projects.
Honoring D-Day Veteran Irving Smolens - If you missed the 70th anniversary of D-Day on the beaches of Normandy, Melrose veteran Irving Smolens was front and center. We plan to welcome him home with a special sign in our Welcome Home Banner kiosk.
Operation Remember Kickoff - These year's "Operation Trip" will highlight the Korean War Veteran in a project entitled No More Forgotten. We are meeting with Operation Remember students from the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School to formulate the criteria for participation in the May 2015 trip to Washington DC. Summer projects include Ice Cream socials at local veteran establishments like the Chelsea Soldiers Home and the VA Hospital in Bedford, MA.
The Knoll Revitalization - Last Memorial Day we began focusing on improving the Knoll, Melrose's World War I monument. Age and time have rendered this beautiful monument forgotten, causing local veteran advocates to call for its restoration. Phase II of this project will target improving the space to include adding monuments (in the years to come) and placing a veteran reflection area on the hilltop.
Veteran Monument and Restoration Fund Golf Tournament - Our first annual Melrose Veteran Monument and Restoration Fund Golf Tournament will be held September 12, 2014 at Mount Hood. Veterans and Korean War veterans receive a discount for participating in this event designed to raise money for monument installation and repair. Tis year's focus is the installation of a Korean War Monument as part of Operation Remember. The monument's design will form the centerpiece of the lunch buffet and presentation.
National POW/MIA Day Honoring Minor McLain - Melrose will once again honor POW/MIA Day by installing a monument in honor of Minor McLain, WWII veteran. This esteemed Melrose veteran was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart for bravery during operations and captivity in WWII. McLain tragically passed in 2013.
POW/MIA Day Food Drive - The Melrose Veterans Advisory Board will once again host a Food Drive at Shaws Supermarket on Essex Street supporting local food banks. These local charities support many veterans and their families seeking emergency food assistance.
Veterans in the Classroom - The Melrose Veterans Memory Project will host its annual Veterans in the Classroom event, pairing Melrose veterans with Melrose High School Freshmen for round robin discussions about service. Students hear presentations from the veterans and document their stories as part of a history gathering effort. Time and place are yet to be determined.
